The Salvation Army Women’s Auxiliary of Fairfax was chartered in 1972 as a fund raising entity and volunteer service group to the Fairfax Corps of the Salvation Army. The organization provides enriching fellowship for likeminded community service women who desire to “do the most good” by meeting human needs.
The Auxiliary assists the Corps in the annual backpack program with members filling hundreds of backpacks with school supplies for local elementary, middle, and high school students. In addition to serving those in need through utility, rental/mortgage, and food assistance, plus providing low-cost afterschool programming, the Corps takes registrations from those in need of holiday assistance through the Angel Tree program. Yearly, approximately 1,300 children receive new clothing, toys, Christmas stockings, and personal care items through this program. The Auxiliary helps with the setup, sorting and distribution of the Christmas stockings and the Angel Tree gifts. The Auxiliary also supplies cakes and pies to the Adult Rehabilitation Center in Annandale for their bimonthly birthday celebrations.
For 39 years, until the coronavirus pandemic in 2020, the Auxiliary held a Fashion Show and Luncheon in the Spring each year. The event featured fashions from such stores as Bloomingdales, Macy’s, Lord & Taylor, and more. In addition to the Fashion Show and Luncheon, there was a Silent Auction and an “Attic Treasures” table with gently used costume jewelry and small household goods. The event raised many thousands of dollars yearly to support a variety of Fairfax Salvation Army programs. It is hoped that this well-received tradition can resume in the future. Until that time, the Auxiliary is actively seeking out new opportunities to raise funds in support of the Fairfax Salvation Army programs.
The Auxiliary meets the third Wednesday of the month at 10:30AM, September through May (excluding December) at the Fairfax Salvation Army Corps building located at 4915 Ox Road, Fairfax, VA 22030. New members are most welcome!
